Adhesive Capsulitis: Current Concepts
نویسندگان
چکیده
Adhesive capsulitis is a common disorder of the shoulder with unknown etiology. It presents with insidious onset of pain accompanied by progressive stiffness and loss of both active and passive range of motion. Adhesive capsulitis is a diagnosis of exclusion and can only be made once other pathologies have been ruled out. The progression and risk factors associated with the disease necessitate individualized patient approaches for pain reduction and functional improvements. This review outlines what is currently understood about the progression of the disease and what treatments have been shown to be efficacious. Despite decades of research into the underlying causes, progression, and treatment, much is still unknown about the condition. The pathology and risk factors for adhesive capsulitis should continue to guide further research to better understand the triggers for adhesive capsulitis and its treatment. Review Article

This review discusses the diagnosis and both operative and nonoperative management of this shoulder condition that causes significant morbidity. Issues related to medications, rehabilitation, and post surgical considerations are discussed.
متن کاملGlenohumeral Joint Injections
CONTEXT Intra-articular injections into the glenohumeral joint are commonly performed by musculoskeletal providers, including orthopaedic surgeons, family medicine physicians, rheumatologists, and physician assistants. Despite their frequent use, there is little guidance for injectable treatments to the glenohumeral joint for conditions such as osteoarthritis, adhesive capsulitis, and rheumatoi...
متن کاملAcromioclavicular joint pain in patients with adhesive capsulitis: a prospective outcome study.
Diagnosis of adhesive capsulitis is a clinical diagnosis based on history and physical examination. Afflicted patients exhibit active and passive loss of motion in all planes and a positive capsular stretch sign. The effect of adhesive capsulitis on acromioclavicular biomechanics leading to tenderness has not been documented in the literature. This study reports on the incidence of acromioclavi...
متن کاملPain & resistance in patients with adhesive capsulitis during contrast material injection phase of MR arthrography.
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE Adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder is a condition of unknown aetiology that results in the development of restricted active and passive glenohumeral motion. It has been reported that magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is useful in diagnosing adhesive capsulitis. We carried out this study to assess how pain and/or resistance during contrast material injection affects the dia...
متن کاملUpper extremity: emphasis on frozen shoulder.
Adhesive capsulitis, or frozen shoulder syndrome, is a condition characterized by gradual loss of active and passive glenohumeral motion. The etiology of adhesive capsulitis is unknown. Treatment methods include supervised benign neglect, physical therapy, intra-articular corticosteroid injections, closed manipulation under anesthesia, arthroscopic capsular release, and open surgical release. A...
